Thoughts on club ID sessions this spring? I saw SSA is having one for their MLS Next and NAL teams in early May. What kind of feedback could we expect if we schlep to Marathon Park for the session? Will the club tell us whether it's interested in my 2010 son? (Or whether we'd be wasting our time trying out?) Do other clubs have similar ID sessions in advance of tryouts?
Our son has been at the same club for five years--he was later than some to academy and later to develop/mature. Now he's as fast/strong as the top level boys at the club (if not more so), and has comparable technical skills. However, it seems that because he was late to develop, the club is unwilling to make room for him on one of their top teams. Last year, other boys his age at the club were facing a similar ceiling. They left and are excelling at ECNL and MLS Next NAL teams.

Go to as many ID sessions and club practices as you can to identify a good place for your son. Don’t chase a league as much as a coach, but look for the highest level that he will be happy and challenged.

My 2012's closest experience was zero feedback, aside from not being invited back to the final night of Pre-MLS Next tryouts. That was as I expected, though, based on conversations with the other parents who came out from our location; all of whom have far more "soccer parent" experience than myself because of their older children.
The way these parents explained it, each coach will typically have a nearly complete roster before we ever show up, and they're really only looking to fill a few missing spots (which they don't advertise) on their roster while leaving the window open for the random stud-from-another-club to show up and surprise them.
My kid still went, knowing all of that, and said he had no regrets. He tried his best, had fun, got some touches, and got to see a wide range of playing ability.

You got SSA(mls next and other team are doing well at that age group for what it’s worth)or NASA to pick from if you are looking for proximity to home.
